The USA is packed with incredible places to visit — from iconic landmarks to cities that have shaped culture, history, and entertainment across the globe. If you’re planning your first trip and wondering where to begin, this list of the top 10 must-see places in the USA covers the big hitters. These are the sites you’ve probably seen in movies, postcards, and travel guides. And while there’s so much more to discover, this is the perfect starting point for first-time visitors.
1. Statue of Liberty – New York City, NY
Standing tall in New York Harbour, the Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognisable symbols of the United States. A gift from France in 1886, it represents freedom and opportunity for millions who arrived through Ellis Island. Take a ferry over for up-close views and climb to the crown if you’re feeling energetic. Our top tip at The Full Fifty is to take the free ferry over to Staten Island. You’ll sail right alongside the statue and it won’t cost a dime. You can either spend a bit of time on Staten Island or just hope right back on the ferry to Manhatten.
2. The White House – Washington, D.C.
The White House isn’t just where the president lives — it’s a symbol of American politics and democracy. While public tours are limited and need to be booked well in advance, even seeing it from the outside gives you a sense of its importance in the country’s history.
3. Grand Canyon – Arizona
Photos don’t do the Grand Canyon justice. It’s vast, colourful, and absolutely awe-inspiring. Whether you’re taking in the views from the South Rim, hiking into the canyon, or catching sunrise over the cliffs, it’s an unforgettable experience. Guided tours are exceptional, and well worth the price. But don’t rule out going solo if you’re on a budget. Whichever way you choose – the Grand Canyon is a must-see!
4. Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco, CA
This bold red suspension bridge is one of the most famous in the world. Walk or cycle across it to enjoy sweeping views of San Francisco Bay, or view it from below at Crissy Field or Battery Spencer. It’s iconic, photogenic, and always impressive in person.
5. Walt Disney World – Orlando, FL
It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Walt Disney World is a must-see for families or anyone looking to experience America’s love of big, immersive theme parks. With four separate parks, including Magic Kingdom and Epcot, there’s plenty to explore — and the attention to detail is pretty incredible. When you couple the gorgeous Florida climate with the magic of Disney, you’ll experience a truly unforgettable holiday.
6. Las Vegas Strip – Las Vegas, NV
The Las Vegas Strip is loud, bright, and unlike anywhere else. Whether you’re there to try your luck, see a show, or just soak up the surreal atmosphere, it’s pure entertainment. From replicas of the Eiffel Tower to indoor canals, Vegas doesn’t do subtle — but it’s certainly memorable.
7. Hollywood Sign & Walk of Fame – Los Angeles, CA
Hollywood is where film legends were made. Hike up to the Hollywood Sign for great views or wander the Walk of Fame to spot stars for your favourite actors, musicians, and directors. It’s a must for any movie buff or pop culture fan. Whilst you’re there, spend time taking in the fresh air from Santa Monica – or even visit Disneyland California (if Florida wasn’t enough already!)
8. Mount Rushmore – South Dakota
Carved into the Black Hills, the faces of four American presidents watch over South Dakota from Mount Rushmore. It’s a striking monument that often surprises visitors with how remote – and impressive – it really is. Outside of Mount Rushmore, South Dakota has an abundance of outdoor recreation activities and Wild West history. Deadwood is also a must-see if you’re in the area!
9. The French Quarter – New Orleans, LA
New Orleans has a character all its own, and the French Quarter is the heart of it. Expect live jazz, colourful balconies, and some of the best food in the country. It’s busy, lively, and full of soul – especially during Mardi Gras season.
10. Route 66 – Multiple States
Once the main road from Chicago to Los Angeles, Route 66 is the classic American road trip. While much of the original route has been replaced by highways, you can still drive long stretches of it through small towns, quirky roadside attractions, and open desert landscapes. A personal favourite of ours at The Full Fifty is the town of Williams, Arizona. Disney fans will feel like they’ve been transported to Radiator Springs – the fictional location in Cars.
This list of must-see places in the USA just scratches the surface. There are hundreds more destinations worth exploring, but if you’re just getting started, these ten give you a real taste of the country’s variety and scale.
